Please take a look at the video lessons on The Scientific Way of Thinking to understand how VERA supports scientific modeling.

Cougar (311910)

Welcome to the Virtual Ecological Research Assistant (VERA)

This is a simplified model of a food web that involves Puma concolor (Cougar), Odocoileus hemionus (Mule Deer), Equus caballus (domestic horse), and grass (base population) generated from the Encyclopedia of Life.

VERA is a tool for modeling and experimenting with ecological systems like the one you see here, and we invite you to try it out!

In the simulation graph, you will see a stable ecosystem where Cougar consumes Mule Deer and Domestic Horse, and Mule Deer and Domestic Horse consume grass.

In VERA, you can increase the consumption interaction probability between Cougar and Domestic Horse to see how it affects the relationship between Cougar and Mule deer as well as other biotic populations.

In order to start exploring this ecosystem, you will either need to log in if you already have an account, or sign up for one if you don't have one yet.
